Your Stories Aren’t Getting The Applause They Deserve

A shock for bloggers recently joining Medium

Firstly, welcome to the club! I understand how it feels, to give your 100% to a post and then, nobody reading it!!! It is heart wrenching, disappointing, frustrating, disheartening, saddening, dispiriting, discouraging, upsetting and all the other synonyms there are!

Now that we’re done with negative thoughts, let’s get into the real deal.

I joined Medium in 2018 and the most views I have gotten on a post are 425, out of which, the internal medium readership was 5% and the remaining 95% were external views (google, social sites etc.). Basically, the number of people on Medium who read my post were 23 out of 425! The post was The Truth About Unrequited Love . To me, this article was one of my bests and one of the most well structured post I have ever written! Yet, no reads! I wasn’t sad though. Reason being, I never expected that it will get the reads it deserves! There are so many writers on Medium, who are writing so much better — EVERYDAY! So, I accepted that being a writer on Medium is no piece of cake! It’s hard work and consistency! I wasn’t doing that & so I faced the consequences.

I still don’t get much views but now, it doesn’t bother me. I wrote one post ten days ago — How to be UNHAPPY. Today I got ONE clap for that post (It’s a lot for me) from a Medium writer! Out of nowhere! Meaning, I AM getting there!

“I wrote for my love for Medium but later it was corrupted with my greed for more readers!”

I am no expert, but I have been a part of this community (Medium) for a long time. Initially, I used to read everyday, every minute, every article I could find on Medium. Then, I started writing. The first few posts were about depression, as I was battling through it, so I wrote with an intention of just letting it all out. I fell in love with Medium and everything related to it! I love the writers here and the publications! There is so much to learn from and share and that’s why I wrote Honestly, Medium Is The Only Reason I Use Internet For . I didn’t get much views on this either. I wrote for my love for Medium but later it was corrupted with my greed for more readers! I wanted to get noticed like everyone else!

Then, I Stopped!

“I sat in the audience, cheering when the ball got outside the court!”

I created my website, wrote there. Meanwhile, I read a lot of Medium content and was content in that thought. I used to share my blog posts on medium but never bothered much. Too many cooks! Too many Players! So I sat in the audience, cheering when the ball got outside the court! For a year, I tried writing a lot and marketing it on all the platforms available!! But, I still didn’t got enough! I wasn’t earning any money! I was working without food, you may say!

In January 2020, I shifted from Blogspot to Wordpress. I deleted my Blogspot site and Wordpress was ON!. I am still not earning any money from my writing, but I am more than satisfied. I don’t earn, doesn’t mean I can’t call myself a professional blogger! I have invested my money for the domain and the plan, SEO and everything else! I am getting traffic bit by bit! Hope I’ll earn soon! I have learnt all of it on my own! This made me come back to Medium as a Writer. So, I did.

I still don’t get much views, but I know, 1 in 100 medium members read what I write and that’s satisfactory for me!

I now am a writer for four publications on Medium. I get rejected and selected as well. That gives me the chance to work on my writing skills. I had some 70–80 followers until January, now I have more than 450 followers on Medium. That means, I’m getting there!

What have I learnt from all this, that can help you?

My story may not be inspiring to you, but what I am about say will be useful. With all these months I spent on medium, dreading and loving it the same time, I KNOW, why you don’t get much views and why your amazing writing that have been hit on your site, aren’t proving to be good enough here on medium.

  • There are thousands of amazing writers on Medium, writing for years. They’ve worked for the readers they now have, the followers they get everyday and their experiences have proven them, they’re the Medium Kings & Queens.
  • With so much content already here, your content will be displaced initially or may be for a longer time. You need to accept that.
  • Once in a while, you’ll get fed up and will take a break from Medium. That’s natural. But embrace the failure because you never know, a post you wrote months ago may get a clap, out of nowhere!
  • Also, Readers READ. So keep WRITING. Be consistent with writing.
  • Take this advice from a Medium user of almost three years, even if you get 1 clap once in a while & no clap at all — You’re still writing good content. The ocean is too cluttered and that’s not your fault.
  • Keep working on your writing skills and get accepted by Publications! They’ll reject your submissions sometimes but that’s okay. You’ll grow in the process.

Now, are you still worried for the applause you deserve OR are you going to work on your next post & submission to a publication?

Thanks for reading. Namaste.
